A love of reading lives on at Quirindi
There’s something special about the way a good story can transport us almost anywhere.
A group of residents are particularly enjoying the weekly Country Reading Group where they gather to listen to Australian short stories and poetry and then, inspired, share memories of their past and life on the land.
The group is currently enjoying ‘Sailor on the Track’ – a tale of a sailor turned swaggie, shearer and rural labourer – and they can’t wait for the next chapter.
“The stories take me back to my childhood. I can almost smell the paddocks”.
— Andy
David agrees.
“It’s comforting to hear something so familiar – it makes me feel settled.”
— David
The group has also revisited favourite classics by Banjo Patterson, and everyone’s enjoying Slim Dusty’s biography given his strong connection to the region.
In addition to the Country Reading Group, residents regularly partake in visits to the local library where they browse the shelves, stock up on reading materials and connect with locals.
