Cathy Halsted – A Champion for Residents and a Mentor for Colleagues 🌟👩⚕️💙
Cathy Halsted is a valued member of the Clinical Care Team at Quirindi Care Services, working as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN). Known for her warmth and compassion, she’s described by General Manager Kim Riley as “an amazing advocate for our residents, mentor, and support to her colleagues.”
Cathy’s journey into aged care began during her senior school years when she cared for a neighbour with multiple sclerosis. Assisting with personal care, meals, and household tasks, Cathy discovered her natural inclination for helping others. “I’ve always been someone who enjoys giving a helping hand,” she says.
Since then, Cathy has built a rich and diverse career. She’s worked as a pharmacy assistant, dispatch clerk, au pair, childcare worker, and preschool assistant, as well as in factory production and aged care. Her experience in culturally diverse workplaces has helped shape the strong, compassionate woman she is today.
Cathy is also a proud mother of four, stepmother of two, and grandmother of five. She names her mother as her greatest supporter and lifelong mentor.
“For me, it’s about making someone else’s day better.”
Cathy approaches her work with empathy and care, treating each resident as she would her own family. Her role includes ensuring the health and safety of residents while providing emotional support to help create a warm, home-like environment.
“Building deep, trusting connections with the residents and their families can be incredibly rewarding,” she shares. “Knowing that your care improves someone else’s quality of life can be very empowering.”
What’s a moment or situation at QCS that made you feel proud of the work you do?
One of Cathy’s proudest moments has been mentoring and training new team members. Seeing their personal and professional growth - and the care they go on to provide residents - gives her a deep sense of fulfilment.
“Walking into a room and seeing the residents smile is the most beautiful part of my day,” she says. Cathy is proud to be part of a team that is committed, caring, and supportive.
Have you faced a particularly tough day or decision in your role? How did you handle it, and what did you take from the experience?
“The most challenging part of aged care is the emotional strain of dealing with death and the decline of residents,” Cathy reflects. “But it’s also where I’ve learnt the most.”
Her time at QCS has strengthened her skills in compassion, patience, empathy, teamwork, and active listening - qualities that are vital in a caring environment.
What makes Quirindi Care Services different from other care settings?
“Quirindi Care Services offers extensive training, embraces multiculturalism, is team-focused, and genuinely respects residents’ choices.”
She also highlights the thoughtful care provided each day - fresh, nutritious meals prepared in-house three times daily, lifestyle and garden activities, and a strong sense of community.
