Staff Spotlight: Garrison Brassington – Championing Quality Care at Quirindi Care Services
A commitment to high-quality, person-centred care is the foundation of Quirindi Care Services. In his role as Quality Coordinator, Garrison Brassington is responsible for ensuring that the organisation not only meets but exceeds the regulatory and compliance standards expected in aged care today. With decades of frontline experience and leadership in the sector, he brings a meticulous, informed approach to safeguarding the wellbeing and dignity of every resident.
"My pivotal role is to assist in the co-ordination and monitoring that QCS provides safe and quality care that meets the needs of our Residents and the compliance and regulatory requirements of state and federal entities."
A Career Built on Compassion and Commitment
Garrison’s pathway into nursing was forged through hands-on experience and continual learning.
"I commenced my nursing career as a wardsman then a Surgical Dresser then a Personal Care Assistant," he reflects.
His early commitment to the sector led him to complete his Certificate III in Aged Care, a pivotal step that saw him offered his first role as an Assistant in Nursing following a clinical placement.
Not one to stand still, Garrison pursued further qualifications, earning his diploma as an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse, a degree in Nursing Sciences, and a Masters in Dementia Sciences. Over the last 15 years, he has managed several aged care facilities across Newcastle while simultaneously owning and operating three hotels — a testament to his drive and adaptability.
His move to Quirindi came with the purchase of his third hotel, bringing about what he describes as a "Tree Change." To maintain his nursing registration, Garrison sought casual work at QCS.
"As they say, the rest is history," he smiles.
Driving Excellence in Care Every Day
In his role at QCS, Garrison's days are dynamic and diverse. A typical day sees him liaising with staff across all departments, coordinating audits, evaluating risk and incident management processes, and reporting monthly to the Governing Body.
"Each working day brings differing tasks and skill mixes to my position. Liaison with the General Manager, the Care Managers, RNs, care workers, hotel services and administration keep me on my toes."
Proud Moments and Meaningful Lessons
One of Garrison’s proudest achievements at QCS was contributing to the facility’s compliance with the Aged Care Quality and Safety Standards, securing another three years of accreditation.
"Achieving compliance... is a group effort and this achievement fills me with a sense of pride."
Reflecting on his career, Garrison highlights an important lesson learned early on:
"I have learnt over the years that one can perform their nursing duties in a professional manner whilst simultaneously befriending Residents and Patients by being their advocate, being a shoulder for them to lean on and an ear to listen."
Why QCS Stands Apart
For Garrison, QCS's community-based, not-for-profit model is key to its excellence.
"QCS provides holistic Person-Centred care to our Residents. Many of our Residents are well known in the local community and are encouraged to continue their engagement with their friends and family in and around the district."
His philosophy towards aged care is deeply personal:
"It is all about choice, decision making and respecting individuals preferences. I would like to think that in my later years, if I was residing in an Aged Care facility and wanted to sleep in until 10.00 each morning, have a beer at 4.00 every afternoon and not be forced to play bingo, that my desires would be acknowledged and appreciated."
Facing Industry Challenges with Heart and Integrity
Garrison is clear-eyed about the challenges facing aged care, especially following the Royal Commission’s reforms.
"The reforms... are timely and required. However, the extensive reporting and accountability... present an added pressure on providers, requiring a careful balance to ensure compliance standards are met while continuing to prioritise one-on-one care for Residents," he explains.
Yet despite these pressures, his experience at QCS has reinforced a crucial insight:
"Since becoming a team member at QCS, I have discovered that irrespective of the demographics, population and geography of rural remote Aged Care Settings, the quality of care remains of the highest standard."
Proud to Serve the Quirindi Community
Garrison’s connection to the wider Quirindi community remains strong.
"I am proud to tell members of the local community that I work at QCS. I receive positive feedback and compliments from all walks of life in and around Quirindi when they learn who my employer is."
Through his role, Garrison continues to be a passionate advocate for older people, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and wellbeing of every resident at QCS. His story is a strong reflection of the organisation's focus on delivering excellence in rural aged care.
